Just recently, I asked my grandma to help me with her bank account number, to deposit some money for her upkeep. Strangely enough, she refused. I was like, WHY? Her response was, “What if the account number get exposed to thieves?” At that moment, I knew that many people have this same fear, even young ladies and gents you think are geeekie and know better. Please, can you do justice to this issue? I would be glad to read your response as a blog post. Not forgetting, i love what you’re doing.
Sometimes. I do wonder if hackers can have access to my bank account using my account number. Believe me, we live in a weird world where anything is possible. However, I want to tell you that it’s technically safe to give out your bank account number, provided you’re not giving out other sensitive details that might make the account vulnerable to theft.
In some banks in Nigeria and the world at large, withdrawal are made from an account provided the withdrawer can provide some account information like signature. That’s if you’re using a passbook for withdrawals. In some cases, the withdrawer has to be the owner of the account or the withdrawal won’t be successful. How they do this is by looking at the passport of the account owner using their system, and looking at you to see if your face matches the one on their screen.
So, someone who has only your account number can only make a deposit, not a withdrawal. This means, it’s safe to give out your account number.
However, I think we should be more careful about exposing the details on our credit or debit cards than our account number. According to recent stats, over 90% of withdrawals are done using the ATM machine. What this implies is that someone can withdraw from your account as long as they have your ATM card. In cases where they don’t know your PIN, they can use it to transact online flawlessly.
Always make sure the details on your card is unexposed, not even to bank personnel. Also enquire from your bank other ways by which you can protect your account from hackers and theft.
